“The Best Books About Ruth Bader Ginsburg for Kids of All Ages. Collective biographies like this can get boring quickly, but this is cleverly designed and does a great job of making connections between the lives of these women and the present day. If you’re looking for a book to give as a bar/bat mitzvah gift, this is an excellent pick.”

RBG’s Women. A journalist and a Supreme Court justice’s final passion project shines a light on Jewish role models. In October 2019, Nadine Epstein C’78 G’78 visited Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s chambers, just as she had multiple times before. Inside the wood-paneled rooms, surrounded by art that Ginsburg had carefully selected, photos she’d taken with theater and opera luminaries, and awards that she’d won, the two women got to talking about role models.

“In these days of strife and division, it has been difficult to come to terms with the loss of such a staunch advocate of equal justice under the law for all as Justice Ginsburg. Yet, this charming book provides unique insight not only into what the Justice was pondering in the final year of her life, and the heroines that helped shape her worldview, but in the legacy she wanted to leave behind.”

I just took a peek at my early notes for the book and the criteria went something like this: “A woman who defied the stereotypes of her time to be a pioneer or amazing success in her field or who saved people, made discoveries or created positive change in the world. She refused to be defined by the expectations and limitations of her time. Her path paved the way for the advancement of women and/or influenced the trajectory of the Jewish people and/or all people. She was not male-defined. She was not only a good and patient wife, a martyr, or a victim. She was a woman whose life and achievements, in the face of gender discrimination and other obstacles, we can learn from and be inspired by today. She was and is a role model.”

Voted one of "A Mighty Girl's 2021 Books of the Year!

group of brave and brilliant Jewish female role models — selected in collaboration with Ruth Bader Ginsburg and including an introduction written by the iconic Supreme Court justice herself! Working with her friend, journalist Nadine Epstein, RBG selected over thirty trailblazers who chose not to settle for the rules and beliefs of their time. They did not accept what the world told them they should be. Like RBG, they dreamed big, worked hard, and forged their own paths to become who they deserved to be.

“The women display a vast range of achievements, approaches to overcoming obstacles, and fields of interest (women of color are notably missing). The main text is more informational than inspirational, but RBG's direct involvement in the project adds cachet. A short blurb following each profile connects the topic to contemporary issues.”

“Epstein’s premise is important and should not be overlooked. She frames the struggles, setbacks, and accomplishments of RBG’s “brave and brilliant” icons within Jewish history and culture, yet she also aims her book at a broader audience. Jewish women who broke the mold within their fields can inspire non-Jews as well. This highly recommended collection includes a prologue and an afterword, “A Call to Action,” explaining the book’s origins and purpose.”

Fascinating in its breadth and depth, this historical picture book explores the contributions of known and unknown Jewish female heroes. RBG's Brave and Brilliant Women: 33 Jewish Women to Inspire Everyone, begins in ancient times with a prophet and matriarch from the Old Testament and spans the ages to mention the first Jewish female astronaut. History books have overlooked many of these women whose achievements shaped the world as we know it -- including groundbreaking social activists, mathematicians, musicians, and physicists whose influence were left out of history books.
